Austal Opens Doors To Community
Project Date: August 2008
Yard tours, face-painting, competitions and fine weather meant the day was a popular outing for many local families, who were keen to learn more about the process involved in building high performance aluminium vessels.
The success of the day also saw Austal raise almost $2000 for the Princess Margaret Hospital for Children Foundation through various fundraising activities, including a raffle to win a trip on Austal’s latest vehicle-passenger ferry during sea trials.
For Austal Ships’ 1200-strong workforce, the day was a chance to show friends and family around their workplace, with many staff volunteering their time to provide public tours of the facility.
Austal Community Open Day Coordinator Courtney Gordon said the event had reinforced the strong ties Austal had with its local community.
“As a major employer in the area, as well as a world-leading manufacturer, we often receive requests from the local community to tour the yard, so this was an opportunity to accommodate that interest, while raising money for a good cause,” Ms Gordon said.
“The turnout was fantastic and a big thankyou goes to all our volunteers who contributed towards ensuring the day was a success,” she said.
Visitors also learned about the extensive career opportunities available at Austal, including apprenticeships in various trades including aluminium fabrication and welding, engineering trades, electrical and cabinetmaking.
