About Austal

Austal Giving

Putting something back

As a significant employer through its Australian shipyards situated in Western Australia, Tasmania and Alabama USA, Austal is committed to assisting the communities in which it operates and has created Austal Giving, which is a fund set up for philanthropic assistance to special programmes.

Austal Giving will principally target mental and physical health in addition to very carefully chosen initiatives promoting higher learning. In keeping with its own corporate culture, Austal will only participate in carefully selected programmes which can demonstrate a high degree of efficiency and low operating costs, ensuring the delivery of maximum benefit to the targeted people in need.

To enable this, Austal has established a dedicated Board Committee chaired by one of its Non-Executive Directors, who is experienced in philanthropic programmes. Its goal is to make a difference in the communities in which it operates by providing financial support, leadership and advocacy of worthwhile health initiatives.

Through a review process each short listed application is critically assessed for compliance against Austal’s support criteria.

Current projects are detailed below. These projects will provide community benefit beyond the initial support period.

The Salvation Army - Men’s Support Service Programme
The Salvation Army is an international organisation operating in over 110 countries around the world. With Austal’s support, the local community will have access to a service which provides support to men who struggle with mental illness, depression, anger management, addiction issues and communication deficiency due to cultural divides.
St Vincent de Paul Society - Vincentcare
The aim of Vincentcare is to develop accommodation with support for people with a mental illness so they can take their rightful place in our community and live their lives as independently as possible. Austal, in conjunction with Vincentcare and the Department of Housing, will construct accommodation facilities for the mentally ill in the local community.
St John Of God Health Care - Comprehensive Cancer Centre
St John of God Health Care has a vision to establish a Comprehensive Cancer Centre – a centre of excellence in diagnosis, treatment and ongoing management, including palliative care and integrative (complementary) therapies. Through annual donations to the Centre, Austal will be helping the Centre provide not only treatment of the disease but advice on minimising the risk of cancer.
Fulbright Scholarship
The Fulbright Programme is one the largest and most prestigious educational exchange programmes in the world. Austal’s support of the Fulbright Scholarship programme will help to allow mutual understanding through educational and cultural exchange between Australia and the United States. This will primarily be achieved through the administration of Fulbright scholarships.
Anglicare WA – Inspired Futures Project
Anglicare WA is an organisation committed to achieving a fair, just and caring society. With Austal’s support, Anglicare is setting up the “Second Time Around Programme” which assists grandparents with grandchildren in their care. This is the first of its type to be available to grandparents in Perth.
