Building Austal's larger commercial and defence vessels Austal Ships offers diverse career opportunities in both trade and professional disciplines. We are a major employer of aluminium fabricators and welders, engineering trades, electricians and cabinetmakers. Our design department includes some 130 naval architects and other engineering professionals.

Austal Image

Austal Image is an independent shipyard also located in the Henderson area with approximately 210 skilled staff members in design, production and sales positions. Austal Image specialises in the construction of a wide variety of vessels including fast ferries, live aboard dive vessels, cruise vessels, private yachts, patrol and support craft up to 60 metres.

Austal Tasmania

Austal Tasmania is an independent shipyard located in Margate, Tasmania near Hobart. Austal Tasmania specialises in the construction of high technology aluminium fast ferries employing apprentices, tradespeople and designers.

Apprenticeships

Austal has a long-standing commitment to developing and retaining world-class tradespeople is reflected in our award-winning training record and the 230 apprentices that are already learning their trades from the world’s best aluminium shipbuilders at the Austal Ships and Austal Image shipyards.

Covering the key areas within the shipbuilding industry, these apprenticeships provide you with an unequalled opportunity to gain a valuable trade qualification whilst building some of the world’s most advanced vessels.

In Australia, Austal takes on an average of 50 new apprentices and trainees each year in the following disciplines:

  • Aluminium Fabrication and Welding
  • Marine Fitout (Carpentry and Cabinet-making)
  • Mechanical Fitting (Engineering)
  • Electrical Mechanics (Electrician)
