Motion Control

Austal’s proven MOTION CONTROL SYSTEM is an advanced vessel stability program that controls Interceptors, Roll Fins, Trim Tabs and T-Foils and Swinging T-Foils to improve sea-keeping capability and reduce vessel motion at sea -  delivering a more stable and comfortable ride for crew, passengers and cargo.

Austal MOTION CONTROL INTERCEPTORS

Austal's MOTION CONTROL INTERCEPTORS are designed for high-speed vessels that require an efficient and cost-effective motion control solution. As the MOTION CONTROL INTERCEPTORS are customised to suit the vessel’s transom profile, they are ideal for both monohull and multi-hull vessels.

Used alone, the interceptors provide both trim and list control. When combined with Austal's MOTION CONTROL SYSTEM, the interceptors also provide active pitch and roll motion control.

Features

  • Modular design for easy installation
  • Suitable for both new and retro-fit installations
  • Robust, impact-resistant blade and support skegs
  • Lightweight
  • Low Hydraulic power requirement
  • Automatic retract function

Benefits

  • Effective pitch and roll motion damping when managed by Austal's MOTION CONTROL SYSTEM
  • Can be used for trim and list control when active motion control is not required
  • Minimal impact on manoeuvring characteristics when retracted
  • Suitable for most hull configurations
  • Compatible with most propulsion methods
  • High lift-to-drag ratio
  • Minimal impact on the vessel’s structural design
  • No impact on the vessel’s hull shape
  • Customised to suit the vessel’s transom profile

Configuration

  • Stainless steel interceptor blade
  • Guide skegs and bearings
  • Stainless steel linkage rod and servo actuators
  • Hydraulic valve control system
  • SmartPac (optional)

Efficiency

Austal MOTION CONTROL INTERCEPTORS provide a more efficient lifting force at high speeds (above approximately 25 knots) then traditional Transom flaps.

Low Power

Austal's MOTION CONTROL INTERCEPTORS require 60% less power then traditional transom flaps therefore offering both cost and weight savings.

Active Control

When integrated with the MOTION CONTROL SYSTEM, the interceptors can effectively control both pitching and rolling motions.

Simplicity

The MOTION CONTROL INTERCEPTOR blade can be customised to suit most transom profiles and has no impact on the vessels hull shape. The systems connection is readily adaptable to composite, aluminium, steel, and wood construction hulls. Austal MOTION CONTROL INTERCEPTOR's can be installed in conjunction with both water jet and propeller propulsion systems.

Operation

The operation of an MOTION CONTROL INTERCEPTOR is as simple as selecting either the trim/list or active operating mode. In the trim/list mode, trim and list are adjusted using arrows on the user interface. In the active mode, the response of the MOTION CONTROL SYSTEM to sea conditions can be set using provided controller settings.

Range of Sizes

Austal's MOTION CONTROL INTERCEPTORS and SYSTEM solutions can be developed for vessels with an LOA of 30 metres or greater; optimised to your vessels operating requirements.

Austal MOTION CONTROL T-Foil

Austal MOTION CONTROL T-FOIL is an efficient and cost effective trim and motion control device. The operation of a T-FOIL is very similar to that of an aeroplane wing. Austal's  T-FOIL's are capable of generating significant lift in both the upward and downward directions and are ideal for high-speed vessels.

When integrated with a Austal's MOTION CONTROL SYSTEM, T-FOILS can actively control the vessel’s roll and pitch motions. When active motion control is not required, the T-FOIL assists in correcting vessel trim and list.

Features

  • Robust fabricated or Nickel Aluminium Bronze (NiBrAl) foil casting
  • Optional gland kit to allow servo actuator removal whilst afloat
  • Modular design for easy installation
  • Suitable for both new and retro-fit installations
  • Low hydraulic power requirement
  • Low maintenance design
  • Wet or dry fit installation options

Benefits

  • Suitable for most hull configurations
  • High force generation
  • High lift-to-drag ratio
  • Foils can be easily repaired
  • Effective pitch and roll damping when managed by Austal's MOTION CONTROL SYSTEM
  • Can be used for trim and list control when active motion control is not required

Configuration

  • Fabricated steel or cast bronze foil and aileron assembly
  • High strength servo actuator
  • Hydraulic valve control system
  • SmartPac (optional)

Foil Strength

Austal's MOTION CONTROL T-FOILS are offered in Bronze or fabricated construction. All foils are designed to withstand bottom-slamming pressures in excess of class society requirements.

Active Control

When integrated with an Austal MOTION CONTROL SYSTEM, T-FOILS can actively control the vessels roll and pitch motions.

Simplicity

The Austal MOTION CONTROL T-FOIL system has been designed to simplify installation tasks and to minimise the support structure complexity. The system is readily adaptable to aluminium or steel construction hulls.

Flexibility

The Austal MOTION CONTROL T-FOILS can be configured for wet or dry fit installation, allowing for greater flexibility of vessel maintenance.

Operation

The operation of an Austal MOTION CONTROL T-FOIL is as simple as using either the trim/list or operating mode. In the trim/list mode, the trim and list are adjusted using the appropriate arrows on the user interface. In the active mode, the response of the Motion Control System to the current sea conditions can be set using the provided controller settings.

Range of Sizes

Austal has developed MOTION CONTROL T-FOIL solutions for vessels with an LOA of 30 metres or greater and can deliver a T-FOIL optimised to suit your vessel’s operating requirements.
